American Spirit Arms - Side Charger AR-15 upper receiver

At the 2012 SHOT Show, one product that got my attention was the American Spirit Arms (ASA) side-charging AR-15 upper receiver. I have always thought the rear charging handle on the AR is a weak point in the design and improvements to it have only been bandaids on a weak design. As I have always liked the FAL side charger design, I was interested in the ASA upper for the AR and this was my first chance to handle one. Well, I was very impressed. The design and operation of the charging handle was simply outstanding. It is in a much better place than a rear handle and it is much stronger and works very smoothly with zero binding. You can feel the quality as you work with it.

I have handled many top of the line AR rifles over the years and did at this SHOT show and the ASA side charger was easily the smoothest cycling AR upper I have ever handled. I went away thinking that from now on, I only want ARs that have the ASA upper. I'm done with the cheesy rear charging handles!

Note that the side charger uppers require a notch cut into the front left side of the bolt carrier. You can buy the ASA uppers with a modified, high quality carrier or if you prefer, ASA will modify another carrier for you to work with the side charger.

Mesa Tactical - Urbino Tactical Stock for Rem

We are now carrying the Mesa Urbino Tactical Stock for Rem 870s. The great thing about this stock is it's size. It has a shorter tactical length of pull of 12.5 inches to make it easy to shoulder and comfortable while wearing body armor, extra field gear or heavy clothing. This aids in control and also makes it a good option for smaller shooters who need a shorter stock. It feaures a Limbsaver recoil pad and a urethane rubber grip, multiple sling options, storage space in the stock under the pad, optional cheek riser (seperate model) and optional shell holders that attach to the cheek riser. 2012 - Back from the Shot Show

Well, it's hard to believe but the 2012 Shot Show has already come and gone. SHOT Show, short for Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show, is hosted annually by the NSSF. We had a great time at the show and enjoyed meeting up with our vendors: PWS, JP, Smith, Enidine (just to name a few). Everyone was busy talking about new product offerings for 2012. We also got the opportunity to scout out some new vendors and products. The walking is wearing but it's worth all the effort in the end. In the next few months, we'll be highlighting some of those new products and posting information, pics and video as we test some of them out.

Mako GL-Shock - M4 Recoil Stock

The GL-Shock from the Mako Group (made by FAB Defense) is a recoil absorbing collapsible stock for AR-15 type rifles or shotguns that use AR-15 collapsible stocks. It has an internal spring that compresses under recoil to absorb some of the shock and soften the felt recoil. It fits onto any mil-spec or commercial AR-15/M4 buffer tube and adjusts for length just like other AR-15 collapsible stocks except that you press on the front of the locking lever instead of the rear of it. It includes tensioning tabs that minimize movement once locked in position and has QD sling mounting points on each side. Additionally, it has a water tight storage compartment under the removeable recoil pad. There is also the option to get it with or without a removeable cheek riser if you need extra elevation for good cheek weld when using optics. This is especially useful when used on shotguns with optics. The shock absorbing spring is designed for heavier recoiling AR cartridges and shotguns. The spring is a bit heavy to compress much under the recoil level of a .223 or even a 7.62x39. But anything more powerful than that and you will realize a recoil benefit from it. Since spring-only recoil stocks have their limitations as to how much recoil they can fully absorb, on a heavy recoiling 12 ga shotgun a great idea is to combine the GL-Shock to the excellent Enidine Shot Shock (a hydraulic shock absorbing stock tube which is part of the Mesa Tactical LEO recoil stock kit and is also sold seperately). Putting the GL-Shock on the Shot Shock does reduce 12 ga recoil even further on this very effective system. When using this combination, both recoil systems compress simultaneously for a very smooth recoil cycle. The GL-Shock will also be very popular for those with AR-10 type 7.62mm rifles as a way to soften things up a bit. For those rifles a great recoil reducing combination is a GL-Shock stock with an Enidine Hydraulic buffer inside the buffer tube.

Mesa Tactical LEO Recoil Stock Kit - Best recoil stock

I tested the Mesa Tactical Recoil Stock kit side by side with a Blackhawk Knoxx Spec Ops recoil stock and a Mako Group (FAB Defense) recoil stock kit on a Remington 870. Using full power 2 3/4" 00 Buck loads and turkey loads of various makes I shot with the Mako stock, then the Blackhawk Knoxx stock and then with the Mesa Tactical LEO Recoil stock with the Enidine Hydraulic shock absorber as pictured. The best way to put it is that it was a night and day difference between the Mesa kit and the other two. The recoil was at least cut in half compared to the other recoil stock kits. I also shot the same loads through a Benelli M1 Tactical at the same time and the Mesa/Enidine recoil stock kit was the only stock that made the Rem 870 kick less than my Benelli. Since Recoil had always seemed high to me on the Rem 870 but had never bothered me at all on my Benelli, I thought this would be a good comparison. Bottom line - the Enidine Shot Shock really works!. The Mesa kit does cost more than the other kits. In some cases, quite a bit more. But you get what you pay for. The other stocks offer some features or characteristics that are worthwhile and give shooters options which is great. But for recoil reduction and control, the Mesa kit can't be beat.
